The much-anticipated release of Bruce Broughton’s latest works for orchestra is now available, and features the debut of three new pieces performed by the London Symphony Orchestra on the Naxos American Classics label.

The album opens with “And on the Sixth Day,” featuring the exceptional Olivier Stankiewicz, principal oboe of the LSO. The three-movement piece describes the sixth day of creation from the first chapter of Genesis: In the Beginning, Evening, and Morning. Mr. Stankiewicz’ oboe takes the role of narrator in the story, a particularly expressive and technically arduous voice that changes as the Day progresses to its joyful culmination.

“Concerto for Horn and Orchestra” is a lyrically powerful, bold and challenging work composed specifically for renowned horn virtuoso William VerMeulen, principal horn for the Houston Symphony, who premiered the piece in 2022 and performs the piece on the album. The three movements each displays the horn as an expressively versatile solo voice with a wide emotional and technical range.

The album concludes with “String Theory,” a tour de force celebrating the most expressive section of the orchestra—the strings. Conceived as a primer on how strings sound, “String Theory” builds from a brief introductory prelude through 18 variations of increasing complexity to an energetic Finale of specific techniques and string combinations.
